MBTA notice deadline
The MBTA's general manager must receive a written claim, known as a presentment, within 2 years of when the accident happened. This rule comes from Mass. G.L. c. 258 § 4.
Time limit for filing a lawsuit
A written denial must come first, or 6 months must pass after the presentment; you then have 3 years after the accident to sue. That time limit is set by Mass. G.L. c. 258 § 4.
Filing a claim with MBTA
It is the MBTA's general manager who receives the written claim, called a presentment. Send it by certified mail, since that lets you prove the date.
