Muni notice deadline
The City and County of San Francisco must receive your written claim for damages no later than 6 months after the accident. Because Muni is a City department, the claim goes against the City. This rule comes from Cal. Gov. Code § 911.2(a).
Time limit for filing a lawsuit
When a rejection arrives in writing from the City, the lawsuit deadline is 6 months after that letter. The limit becomes 2 years from the accident if no written answer ever arrives. That time limit is set by Cal. Gov. Code § 945.6(a).
